I am an experienced musical theatre MD, with particular expertise in singing technique and musical arrangement.
I have musically directed all kinds of theatre. I have worked on both small and large scale professional productions, conducting from the keyboard and ‘on stick’. My repertoire as an MD has ranged from rock to operetta – with a bit of opera thrown in – and I am always eager to explore new works.
I am used to working with singers of all abilities, and have particular experience of working with actors who have little or no formal singing training. My understanding of vocal technique has enabled me to coach strong and vocally sustainable performances out of such actors in the past.
As an experienced arranger, I can also create new vocal and musical arrangements ‘on the fly’, leading to a fluid workflow in the rehearsal room. This has proved useful when working on new writing – or, indeed, when the director suddenly wishes to have a chorus of mermaids halfway through HMS Pinafore.
Finally, I am highly competent with music technology, and am skilled at preparing backing tracks, click tracks and backing vocals. I have my own portable rig which enables me to work on location at the rehearsal space or theatre.
Recent clients include Illyria Theatre Company, Paul Holman Associates and Birmingham School of Acting.
